Edinson Cavani has been advised by Gianluigi Buffon to put thoughts of a move to Napoli out of his mind and concentrate on winning the Champions League with Paris St Germain .

The Uruguay striker has been heavily linked with a return to the club where he made his name in Europe, and played against them twice for PSG when the sides drew home and away earlier in the season.

It’s possible that one of the two teams will be eliminated from this season’s Champions League at the group stage, with both needing a victory in their final game to be sure of progression.

Lose, and the door will be opened for Liverpool to sneak through to the last-16 instead.

“I often talk about Italy with him [Cavani],” Buffon told L’Equipe . “He is very close to Napoli for the love of the Neopolitan people. He is not insensitive [to the calls of Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis], but I think at the moment PSG gives him more chance to get to the Champions League final.

“Not that Napoli don’t have a chance. But I think he will prefer to try it with us until June.”

Cavani was a hit during his three years at the Stadio San Paulo, scoring 104 goals in 138 games and helping the team win the Coppa Italia in 2012.

He left in 2013 to become one of PSG’s first big-money signings following the Qatari Sports Investment Group purchase of the club with the intention of making them a European force.

That ambition is yet to be fulfilled, and the team have failed to make it past the last-eight of Europe’s premier club competition since the takeover.

Now it is Cavani’s former club who look like they could play a part in yet another European disappointment for the French champions.
